What’s changed in 2027 for Directed Writing on Paper 2?
- The combined length of the reading passages is now shorter, set at around 550–650 words.
- The first task is now split into two separate questions, 1(a) and 1(b).
- Question 1(a) now tests skills R3 (analysis, evaluation and development) and R4 (understanding how writers achieve effects). R4 is a new addition to this paper. It is worth 5 marks. Students need to identify implicit attitudes from a short paragraph, and support their analysis with relevant details from the text.
- Question 1(b), the Directed Writing task, now awards 10 marks for reading and 25 marks for writing. This is five less marks for reading than in previous years. The reading mark scheme now looks more similar to Paper 1’s Extended Response, identifying points, details and development from the texts.
